Hamilton was determined to stop Burr who never would specify exactly what his insult was as per the etiquette of the duel.
Burr was apparently much in love with his wife and when she died his imagination was much exercised. He raised his daughter with a male education and was also devoted to her.

According to a genealogy website, NC Senator Richard Burr is a descendant of a brother of Vice President Aaron Burr’s father, who was also named Aaron Burr.
Aaron Burr Sr. had two children, Fanny and Aaron, Jr. Aaron Sr. and his wife, Esther Edwards, daughter of the famous preacher Jonathan Edwards, died when their children were very young. Aaron Jr. married Theodosia Prevost, widow of a British Army officer. Their daughter, Theodosia Burr (Alston) was his only legitimate child. She and her son both died without other descendants.
Aaron Burr was a fond stepfather to several children of his wife’s first marriage. He is also believed to have illegitimate children, but the details are in dispute. He is said to have “recognized” as his own the child of any woman with whom he’d had an affair, without looking into the details too closely.
His mother’s diary, of which I have an abridged reprint edition, says that Aaron Burr was an energetic, forceful, willful, and messy child. Clearly a personality to be reckoned with, even before the trauma of losing his parents and grandparents while he was still an infant.
