We went to Niagara on our honeymoon and arrived there around five in the evening on April 30, 1962. The basin was frozen solid when we arrived. We stayed in what was then the Park Hotel which was right on the river next to the falls. During the night we were awakened by what sounded like cannon fire.It was very very loud. When we went to the falls the next morning the ice was gone. It had broken apart during the night and was swept downstream. We never forgot that sound. By the way this was a nice hotel that as we remember it cost $10.00 for the night.
