A math education professor at the University of Illinois says the ability to solve geometry and algebra problems and teaching such subjects perpetuates so-called white privilege.
Rochelle Gutierrez laid out her views on the subject in an article for a newly published anthology for math educators titled, “Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods.”
“School mathematics curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean Theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans," she says, according to Campus Reform.
She also says that addressing equity in mathematics education will come when teachers can understand and negotiate the politics outside the classroom.
“On many levels, mathematics itself operates as whiteness. Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as white,” she writes.

Her problem with math is that it is objective. The answer is either right or wrong. There is no way to have “affirmative grading” other than by outright cheating.
This puts black teachers in a dilemma in a mixed classroom, when their black students do worse than non-blacks. Either the black teacher is racist against fellow blacks, or her black students, by objective measure, are intellectually inferior.
Either is unacceptable.
the real issue/problem is if allowed to be educated instead of placed on the ed to prison pipeline Blacks are superior to whites and even Asians in mathematics. but the demmicommies don’t want their kids to have the competition.
I ascribe to the unit idiot theory. No matter how you mathematically manipulate idiots of any form or function there will always be one idiot remaining.
How could we have missed the historic and groundbreaking contributions to mathematics from the African continent?
English and Spanish (and French and German and . . . ) are “white,” too.I suggest that Prof Gutierrez abandon its (wouldn’t want to assume anything . . .) name and learn and speak some non-European language. I won’t understand anything it says, but then I’m white so no great loss from it’s point of view anyway. Its problem then would be that hardly anyone in North America would understand it. And nobody with any money would want to pay it to teach anything.
