Another teachable moment. Our lifetimes are ridiculously short in geologic terms. This phenomenon could possibly be not that unusual in the history of the Earth, we just have never encountered it yet.

Exactly.

Humans haven't been around long enough to experience most things that happen on earth.

We've seen climate change before though.(In fact, a few times)
