Most meteoritic iron is almost like Stainless steel... Does not rust away like most early smelted iron, due to high nickel content. So, any ancient iron artifacts found buried for centuries, in all but the driest climate / ground are very likely to be of meteoric iron.

Back in my knife making days I made a few small knife blades completely out of meteorite, and when I made ‘damascus’ I always used at least a small piece of meteorite in it ‘for the magick’. Some of my best blades were layered meteorite and a medium carbon steel. If I could have afforded it, I’d have worked only with meteorite.

Knives made from high nickel content ae rarely but occasionally found on or resting near old New England Stone walls. Early Model T engined had valves made of nickel iron - had one on a property I bought decades ago, but someone stole it.
