A petition with the goal of renaming a San Jose roadway after former President Barack Obama is starting to gain some traction.
Alex Shoor is helping to orchestrate the name change effort in hopes of celebrating the 44th president's legacy and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
"Now maybe more people in this country can truly believe that anyone can be president, and we want that hope to live on," Shoor said. "We want that hope to live on across the country and we want that hope to live on here in San Jose."
Almaden Boulevard in the heart of downtown San Jose is one of the roadways that could be swapped for the former commander in chief's name. That's because four streets in the South Bay city already feature the word "Almaden" in some capacity.
Actually swapping a street name takes time, public input, 1,000 support signatures and about $7,000 to cover the application for the name change.
Supporters of the movement hope the public pitches in to help, saying the effort does not represent a political showing but is more of a testament to history. "He was a U.S. president," Marissa Harris said. "Plenty of boulevards named after U.S. presidents, so why not him?"
At least 10 roadways across the country and one in Tanzania already feature Obama's name.
All Left turns leading to a Dead End.
Don't be nasty. Something appropriate should be named after him. How about a garbage dump or sewer?
“You see that place that says ‘Rib Tips’?”
You will only be allowed to turn left.
It was quite sad here in Seattle when they renamed Empire Blvd to MLK. The thing was, MLK never once set foot in WA state, but Empire Blvd was named after the Empire Builder, the train that brought the majority of settlers to the region. We traded real history that was meaningful to the region for being a me-too politically correct poser. Nowadays, few kids even know that the Empire Builder even existed. And yes, it runs right thru the worst part of Seattle.
aka The Hershey Highway.
‘Race Baiter BLVD’
Works for me.
I feel bad for the road.
I know you’re kidding, but that’s how San Diego solved its MLK street problem. Named a freeway after him. No one had to change their address and as far as I know, the MKL Freeway has no more crime than any other.
Seattle did it with an entire county.
Didn’t they change King County (named after a dead white man), to King County (named after ML)?
There’s a street unofficially named Obama Way in Seaside, CA. The sign is a different color than the official name (which it also has).
Chronically full of pot holes, and leads you to nowhere.
Oh goody, another place to buy drugs, find hookers, and get mugged.
They should do it. It will end up as a microcosm of Bath Houses administration: muggings, theft, drugs, etc.
As a metropolitan center, the San Jose county/city dump must have a nice, wide, multi-lane access road...
Good area for a quick real estate boom, eh? ;-D
Nah. Name the next minor sewer line after him.
In 1957 I lived at the south end of Beacon Hill in Seattle and Empire Way was one of the main north-south routes through the city. To get to the University of Washington, someone coming from the south would take Empire Way, switch left to Rainier Ave. and the follow 23rd Ave. to the Montlake Bridge and the University. I used to ride the city bus from the south end along Beacon Ave to Othello St. and then transfer to a bus that went down the hill and turned on Empire Way and proceeded north to Graham St. and Sharples Jr. High School, which had 1800 students at the time.
Today the route is used by the Sound Transit train to go to Sea Tac Airport. The neighborhood is very “diverse”.
If they want to name a road after obama they should call it BS Dr. and I don’t mean Barry Soetoro.
