You have to understand that Microsoft is a “legal” gang. When they send out updates for their software they can also include code that will cause your “outdated” operating system to do strange things.

They’re not the only ones either. My android tablet went tee-you because some of the google updates messed up the google O/S I already had. Anytime an organization - private or government - gets so big it can dictate what you must do it is a DICTATOR in the classic sense of the word. From that point on you are working for them...for free!

Not sure about that, but I do know you can purchase a parallel ms os to install on a Mac, although I did not have to do that for my purposes. I think your best bet would be to go into an Apple store and just talk to the techs. Just walk in and they sign you up for an appointment......they text you about ten minutes before your time so that you can go out and about until your appointment. It is all highly organized, efficient and useful.

I have used windows for years and switched to Macs... and never looked back.

One can have a Mac on for many weeks before needing a reboot! That alone is worth the price.

Newegg (first choice) or Tigerdirect both sell refurbished units for a good price. I have also bought from local refurb dealers. I have had good luck with Dell.

Go with Windows 10 not Windows 7. You can adapt to it quite easily and you won’t have to deal with the eventual hassle to upgrade later.

I like Bestbuy myself. You can go into the store and often see what you are going to buy. Go with a mainstream computer that lots of people are buying. I like HP. Get as much RAM as you can, e.g. 16GB or more.

Go with the “Computers For Dummies” option.

Get a Chromebook. Cheap and virtually maintenance free.

BTW, Windows 10 has a simple option too. It’s called Windows 10 S. It works kinda like Chrome OS, which is the OS behind Chromebooks. So, you could also get a PC with Windows 10 S installed and leave your worries behind.

Baynative will need a 64 bit machine to use more than 4 gig of memory. Something to keep in mind.

“people that still wish they could use DOS instead of Windows.”

That would be me.

Both HP and Dell sell new systems running Windows 7. They’re in their “business” sections. I’m planning to get a desktop system for Christmas. We’ve had good luck with Dell for 20 years.

Each of us got a high-end HP laptop with Windows 10 last year, and I’m turning mine to a doorstop ASAP. I hate Windows with the heat of 1,000 burning suns.

Was that a dealer or privater seller?

It was one of those dealers who 'recycles' off-lease laptops.

I5-3320M, 15", 500GB HD and 8GB RAM. While it didn't look new it certainly didn't look used either :)

An industry “dirty little secret”. Many refurbished computers are really brand new. When the new model year rolls out people won’t pay “new” prices for last years model. However, if they discount the older model then it will hurt sales of the newer unit with similar specs.
So, drop a year off of the warranty and pack it in a no frills box. You now have a “refurbished” unit.

Some are truly refurbished but most major retailers aren’t going to mess around with a few units.

What is chrome supposed to add as a benefit? It is on my wife’s computer and seems to cause a lot of frustration. I don’t understand it.

I was on a PC from the beginning early 1990s until about 2016.

In 2009 I purchased the iPhone 3GS and then in 2011 the iPad II. Since then I have upgraded to an iPhone 6 and iPad Air a few years ago, and both work fantastic to this day.

I finally decided to get Apple. I purchased an iMac. This is because you get more power with your desk top than laptop computer. Moreover, I rather bring my iPad and iPhone when I travel. It’s lighter and does what I need it to do.

Anyhow, I purchased an iMac 21.5” 4K with Intel i7 chip 6 Generation and 16GB of DDR3 Ram. I have 2TB Fusion Drive too.

The setup was very easy to do. Anyone with an education of a 10 year old child do it. Bringing over my information from my PC to my new iMac important files, email, etc... from Windows worked very smoothly and was quick. All I had to to copy my the files I wanted to bring over onto a portable flash drive (that works with both PC and Apple) with a USB. I copied everything I wanted on to it, and then pasted it into my new machine drive. That was it.

Now I had Microsoft Office and used Outlook, Word and Power Point. I went over to the Microsoft web site and purchased the latest office for Apple on their web site. That way I could look at my files.

BTW, the Apple comes with it’s own version of Office and it’s very good too.

Apple is very simple to operate and the best part is you never have scan for viruses, spyware, etc... It just works as a computer should. Everything is point, click, on or off.

I finally got the Apple TV too. Thus, I am in the Apple ecosystem. It’s nice because all my devices talk to each other. If I do work on my iPhone or iPad it will show up on my iMac and vice versa.

Anyway, I don’t regret it and it’s been a great experience.

Oh Gawd! Another fan boi!

I am so sick of the apple cult always going on about how “easy” their stuff is. How it always “works,” and they don’t have to “worry” about malware.

THAT’S NOT WHAT COMPUTING IS ABOUT!

Home computing is about pain, and suffering, and doing the right thing for America!

I’m PROUD whenever my laptop stops talking to my printer! I’m PROUD whenever I get an error that requires professional AMERICAN customer service reps to fix! I’m PROUD everyone KNOWS “I’m not gay” because REAL business requires a full time Microsoft specialist!

Lee Greenwood and Microsoft baby: that’s the ticket.

“Starting over” to learn the “Mac system” is like starting over to learn to make mac’n cheese in the microwave instead of the stovetop.

Step daughter has her own IT business, her dad also taught it. We both operate on Win 7 Pro. my lap top is partitioned off with XP to run his old Cad Program. On a lap top, it came with Win 10, she deleted it and installed Win 7 Pro and the XP.

She perfers her Mac to Microsoft crap. But has to have both from a business stand point.

Going Win 10 would mean I’d have to buy all new software for my quilting program, Win 7 is has high as it will opperate and I don’t need it to do more than it does now. I don’t want to spend another $200 on a software program, even the update is that expensive.

Firefox updated and screwed up my operating. Now having to use Chrome, not a big fan, but it updates less.
