i wouldn’t mind if God saw fit to remove chunks of people from this world who are worshipping golden calves of one sort or other, just as He did before in the bible.

God has not changed, He just gave His Son the authority to avenge the death of the innocent. When an innocent man dies by the hand of a man, it is by the hand of man that his death is avenged.
When the armies of heaven follow their King down here to rule, it will have been man that will kill the enemies surrounding Israel and avenge the prophets and the lives of the innocent.
