The high water mark of 1950's car design. Scads of chrome, rocket-ship tailfins and 5,000 lbs of good old fashioned American made steel on an X frame. (We won't dwell on the 8MPG fuel economy). A true automotive goddess from another age.

‘59 Caddy was my favorite car as a youth - and you could pick them up cheap right up until I could have actually afforded one, and then the prices skyrocketed. Eldorado has even more chrome, if you can believe that.
I still wouldn’t mind one, but my tastes have changed as I’ve gotten older. These days I need a truck, and if I had to choose a second car, it would be something a little more sporting than anything Cadillac built back then. Maybe as a third car...

If I’m not mistaken, I think 58 was the peak year of big detroit for that time period, much like 78 was. My dad had a 78 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham in white with red leather interior. It was like a moving living room ... gorgeous car...

And pretty soon even some of the cheapest, cheesiest cars on the market all had big fins, capitalizing on the bizarre notion that because Cadillacs had fins, any car that had fins must be wonderful like Cadillacs - and giving rise to the famous "Cadillac phenomenon" in politics - liberals who think that because we should stick up for deserving underdogs, sticking up for all underdogs makes them automatically deserving.......
Or, as one of my black friends used to say, "PONTIAC really stands for Poor Old N***** Thinks It's a Cadillac".....

As kids we used to play touch football in the street. A friend of mine went out for a pass and another kid tagged him pushing into a 1959 Chevy Impala. The wing dug into his back and he had go home bleeding and bruised. From then on we called that particular car the Chevy Impaler.

That's a Cuban car, isn't it. Maybe we'll import them again, one day.

That rear view is shear artistry. Kind of sexual allusions.

That ‘59 Chevy was my grandmothers car she was temporarily staying with us while her house was undergoing a remodeling. We told her what happened and felt bad about it but when we told her the cars nickname, the Impaler, she laughed. Her car became legend in the neighborhood.

It’s one thing to have vertical fins, but horizontal fins are weapons.
