“Had no idea where they were” went out the window circa 1990, plus or minus.
That’s how long I’ve had a handheld GPS with 4 AA batteries inside.
Their story does not add up on many levels.
Even if they could not raise their mainsail due to a lost halyard (any ocean sailors should be able to remedy this in an hour) their roller-furling jib on the bow is entirely intact and ready to unfurl and get them sailing.
Unless they were just 100% clueless morons who took out a sailboat without knowing how to sail, depending 100% on the engine for propulsion.
Their story is absurd, many lies are being told, otherwise, they are literally morons who should be living in a care facility with close supervision.
Agreed.
It should be amusing when they start doing interviews when they get ashore.
Maybe their strategy will be only to give interviews together, as a team.
After seeing them Im going with Option B.

Six months is a long time to read Sailing for Dummies and to practice using trial and error.
I’m not a sailor, but I have sailed. At the end of the day, it ain’t that hard.
“Had no idea where they were went out the window circa 1990, plus or minus.”
That’s the hard to believe part. No GPS? Liberals like them LOVE technology. Hell, Garmin made a fortune selling GPS devices to liberals.
The only explanation is if they were the arrogant “natural” liberals that thought technology is against their religion and wanted to “sail by the stars”, only to find out they didn’t know how.
I know a few liberals like that. Morons. They get lost and love it.
