Anyway, the famous line from McGreevey's resignation speech (October 2007), was "I am a gay American." Until then, I had never seen identity politics used in such a way to try to excuse or deflect from his actual criminality by trying to garner sympathy for being gay.

That statement hit all the wrong notes and notice he did not say he didn't try to have sex with a child under 16 and he did not say he was not a pedophile (usually innocent people will say they are not guilty of the crime they are being accused of) he just tries to bury it under his "coming out" announcement.
