*** Spam is a particularly popular food staple in the string of islands***

Probably reminds them of the taste of LONG PIG.

There is a Spam museum in Austin, Minn. Very interesting and worth the visit. Plus, you can buy every version of Spam that is made.

I'm one of the early Baby Boomers, born a year after WWII ended. I grew up in a (lower) working class family. My eighth grade educated dad held a steady job, and we lived in a comfortable rented house. My mom was not so lucky while growing up. She grew up during the Depression, raised by a widowed mother, and sometimes had to go to bed hungry. My dad grew up on a farm, and never had any money, but always had enough to eat. Our family wasn't rich, but I didn't know it. Our lives were quite typical of most of the kids I knew in our small mid-western town.

Spam was a staple of our diet. I remember often having the 'privilege' of opening the can with the attached key, and rolling back the top of the can. The fat had a waxy texture, and was not very desirable when cold. There were often globs of it in the can. However, when the span was warm from frying, or baking, it was quite acceptable to eat. Once a year, or so, we would have a dinner of real steak, usually after my uncle would butcher a cow. Us kids knew this was the meat where "you could eat the fat". We would eagerly look forward to this great event.
