Insurance companies often hire unqualified people to serve as ‘gatekeepers’. This sounds like a case decided by some ridiculously unqualified ‘gatekeeper’. Considering the amount of money spent on adults in the last months to year of their lives, denying coverage for a 9 month-old infant is unconscionable.

Insurance companies suck. Well they do now.

5 years ago I underwent radiation for stage 1 breast cancer. I was fortunate to be eligible for APBI. (In short, one becomes a plug and play device for 5 days.) I went to MDAnderson twice a day for 5 days for radiation as opposed to once a day for 6 weeks.

The insurance pre-approved the procedure. Afterward they called it “double billing”. MDA repeatedly appealed the decision. Bottom line... UnitedHealthCare screwed MD Anderson out of 20K of negotiated fees.

Insurance companies are FOR PROFIT businesses.
Spending money on cancer treatment is clearly expenses. If the health insurance companies are also offering life insurance coverage, then they might sing a different tune. Until then, it is simple economics. Maximize the revenue while minimizing expenses.
