The Constitution is the charter of this country.
No Constitution, no country. We would have to create a new charter.

Even in the early 1900s progressives were sick and tired of constitutionalism because they were sick and tired of not being able to keep power once they get elected to something. They believe power is rightfully theirs and that their accession to power should end the whole concept of popular choice and political change by elections.
