Ga. sheriff indicted for sexual battery in high school drug search

WORTH COUNTY, Ga. - A south Georgia grand jury indicted Worth County Sheriff Jeff Hobby on Tuesday for sexual battery, false imprisonment and violation of oath of office after he ordered a school-wide search of hundreds of high school students. Deputies allegedly touched girls vaginas and breasts and groped boys in their groin area during the search at the Worth County High School April 14.

Two of Hobby’s deputies were also indicted Tuesday in connection with the case.

The controversial search drew national attention because of how the body search of students was conducted under the guise of a drug search, but produced no drugs or arrests.

The Worth County indictment accuses Hobby of one count of violating his oath of office and two counts of false imprisonment — all felonies charges. He was also indicted on one count of sexual battery, a misdemeanor.

From an earlier report...

Worth County Sheriff Jeff Hobby went to Worth County High School on April 14 with a "target list" of 13 students that he suspected of having drugs, the lawsuit says. Only three of the students on the list were at school that day, and Hobby asked that they be brought to school administrative offices.

Hobby then had an announcement made that the school was being placed on lockdown, and students were confined to their classrooms, the hallways right outside their classrooms or the gym, and their cellphones were confiscated so they couldn't call their parents, the lawsuit says.

Sheriff's deputies then conducted invasive searches of the students' bodies, including touching students' private parts and lifting their clothing in view of other students, the lawsuit says.

The short answer may be that he groped the child of a wrong parent. And the DA saw which way the wind was blowing.

For some background, Worth County is in the Tifton Judicial Circuit. So while the sheriff would run county wide, the DA and the Judge run Circuit wide. Worth county has around 20,000; Tift has about twice as many. (The other two counties in the circuit don’t come up to 20,000 combined.) Looks like the DA operates out of Tift County.

Yup! Stand up for your kids and protect them from evil, even under the guise of a badge. I've taken action against teachers and principals in defense of my kids. Their standard answer - "other parents aren't protesting". Some parents don't get involved in looking out for their kids or can't be bothered. I've gotten a teacher removed from teaching a class because of misbehavior to a room of kids. All it takes is one parent to strongly say no to inappropriate behavior towards students to put a stop to it.

In general, the Drug War became a lot less fun when it made its way out to the suburbs.

Alaskawolf would likely have tripped all over himself to defend this as being all within standard police procedure.

Did the Sheriff have a search warrant? If not, the principal should be fired & arrested for allowing the illegal search to happen.
