Honest is the best policy. At least people would know what they are buying into.
Look at Jerry Jones showing solidarity with his players last week. He is worth something in the vicinity of $5B, most of which came from the ownership of the Cowboys. When he sides with the players it is because they have very expensive contracts, and the incentives to have the team do well (reach playoffs and beyond) are huge. Alternative to that short term consideration is the brand value of the team. That has taken a hit, but as an owner he is protecting against player discontent which could lead to them tanking a season, and accepting a diminution in brand value, which he assumes will be smaller in magnitude and only temporary. I think he could be wrong, and when he sees how much the decline in brand value is he may change his tune.
I would prefer that people respond to such issues on principle, but, it's his team. His initial position is a concession to the ability of disaffected players to lay down and not try during a given season. If the ratings stay down or continue to decline, he's going to have to measure the hurt and re-evaluate. In the meantime I am outta here as an NFL fan. Gone.

Well ... I can think of ANOTHER acronym under “BL-MF-L” ... but I won’t spell it out ... ;>)
