My great uncle was one of the missing crew members on a sunken sub during WW I. Hmmmmm?

I had a neighbor that was a USCG, and one of his stories was about a sub that went down on a training mission just before the US entered WWII, and didn't come back up. He was adamant that it wasn't the Squalus. (He'd met some of the survivors in Kittery/Portsmouth.)

Sure enough, the US Navy reactivated a number of WWI-era boats for training, and the O-9 was the last of three O-boats that day to do a practice dive, and was lost.

He was assigned to a cutter at the time, and it went out to the rescue attempt.
