I'm about as old as you are and I never got Mae West. A little before my time for sure but I love some of the old comedy movies like Laurel and Hardy, WC fields and Marx bros. etc. But I never even got a half a chuckle out of anything by Mae West. She was so wooden of an 'actress' they could have dressed up a manikin and read the lines for her and you wouldn't see any difference.

I never saw what anyone of that period saw in her. Oh and I also thought she was fat and ugly so how did she get a reputation as a 'sex symbol'? That always kind of nonplussed me.

Don't know if you have ever heard terms such as: more cushion for the pushin, pleasing plumb, etc. Not just in her (Mae West) hay-days,did men in general like / love shall we say bigger women, but if you should check out some of the women from "The old west," who went town to town, you'll find a lot of them were shall we say Mae West sized.

One of the more controversial movie stars of her day, West encountered many problems, especially censorship. She bucked the system, making comedy out of prudish conventional mores, and the Depression-era audience admired her for it.

Mary Jane "Mae" West (August 17, 1893 – November 22, 1980)[1] was an American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, comedian, and sex symbol whose entertainment career spanned seven decades.

She wrote all of those lines with the double entendres. (Which I didn't know, until reading the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mae_West)

Her productions aroused controversy, which ensured that she stayed in the news, which also often resulted in packed houses at her performances
