After reading some reviews, it appears the critics are more upset about the main character being portrayed as a traditional housewife than all the violence and depravity that surrounds her.

Mother is a pretentious stab at making “art” from “controversy” and “important messaging” for a mass audience that is culturally illiterate in film, history, and politics.
“I like to show it to people who I’m meeting the first time because I think it says so much about who I am and what it feels like to inhabit my specific skin.”
And for the record, Ghost World is the best comic book film adaptation ever.
