One of the reasons I bring this up is that much of what is said on Free Republic would cause them to shut it down if they were able.

Jim Robinson is right to have his own servers and host his own site. It may or may not cost more, it may or may not be less reliable, but I think the protection against being at the mercy of a gutless (or outright hostile) hosting service is worth it.
