My grandfather ran a corner store from the 50s to the 70s. He said that it was common to have "hoboes" come in and work a day or two for money, or just food. There's *always* something to be cleaned, painted, washed, swept, etc in a little store.

IMO, the smart ones took food, my grandmother was a fantastic cook, and always made enough to feed an army. I'm sure that they ate well while they were working, and took a couple of days' worth on the road with them.

It was a simpler time.
