From Road & Track

During Monterey Car Week this August, perhaps the most famous Porsche 917 in the world will cross the auction block. This 1970 Gulf-liveried 917K was used as a test car for Le Mans before becoming the star car in Steve McQueen's legendary racing movie legendary racing movie Le Mans film. After being sold and left to sit in a barn for over two decades, it emerged in 2001, and now after a full restoration, it's been sold for $14 million, making it the most expensive Porsche ever.

If you're not familiar with the 917K, it was the first Porsche to win Le Mans outright, and features a stunning design and a lovely-sounding flat-12 engine. Thanks to its on-screen presence, and its famous orange and blue Gulf livery, this is arguably the most iconic 917 of all time. And now, it's also the most expensive. Fitting.

The Greater Fool Theory proved again. In my opinion, that car is worth every penny of 14 million.

Owned by a dead actor and featured in a movie gives a premium of just under 12 million dollars. The 14 million investment gets zero dividends, requires monthly output for secure covered storage, insurance and vehicle maintenance.

Better check with my accountant on this one.

About ten years ago, I rubbed elbows—for a day—with England's Vic Elford, one of the drivers at Le Mans. (I'd attended ALL 24-hours of the 1968 LeMans race—cheering the Porsches—but wasn't disappointed that Ford won).

The Porsche 917K at LeMans, which Vic Elford drove, was timed at LeMans at 224-MPH. (But had seen 240). As a newbie to South Florida in his career, he stepped off the plane onto a sunny ramp, and announced, I'm moving here"—which he has.

He never mentioned that it was difficult to drive, nor that he had driven the 917 for the movie. He'd written a book on driving fast: I didn't need it, but bought three autographed copies anyway. ;)

No you were correct it was dull.

But what about the love interest? ;)

Some of the most surprising people end up with Jesus. Paul being probably the most unlikely of all but then he did have that encounter on the road to Damascus.

The love interest (I would have to look up her name) never turned my crank but of course YMMV.

That “love interest” was an early criticism of the movie—and I’d totally forgotten that face. I’m also feeling better about my nose, which is slightly distorted—not that anybody noticed!
