I've just become the owner of an Inland Mfg. M1 Carbine (reproduction). I'm familiar with the weapon but I've never owned or fed one and I'd like some wisdom about what might be the best ammunition for it. I want to buy a bulk quantity, but I don't have any knowledge about the going brands (Aguila, PPU, S&B etc.), and what issues there might be with regard to reliability and accuracy. I'd appreciate any input from those more knowledgeable about the weapon. Thanks.
No, the rest is fine but mine went through three extractors in about 1,000 rounds. I was fun to shoot, though. I had one before ARs were available.
Hornady makes a self-defense round for the M1 carbine. Hornady has a good reputation
I was wondering if the extractor problem was related to steel cased ammunition, but if you experienced the problem before AR’s were available I guess we can rule that out. Are carbines sensitive to dirty chambers?
I’m a great fan of Hornady products. Have you used those rounds in a carbine? I wonder if those soft tips might jam into the feed ramp. I do know that the carbine, like the military 1911’s were designed for ball ammo.
I’m also a fan of PPU.
Aguila sometimes uses harder primers. In the M1 carbine this may not be an issue. It has been in some pistol calibers I’ve tried.
Hey SF, you doing OK?
I’m a big fan of the PPU ammo.
Load it with name brand ammo and it’s a great rifle, just keep it within it’s limit’s. With ball ammo it almost tickles 1000 ft-lbs of energy. Feed it hollow point rounds and it’s quite deadly, again keep it within it’s means. Good for home defense and small game. I have a couple of carbines and two pistols chambered in that round, both Ruger Blackhawk old models with 7 1/2 inch barrels. I would caution anybody shooting this through a pistol, definitely wear hearing protection, they are loud. They will shoot about a 3 ft flame out the end with factory rounds. I carry one in the truck when on the ranch and have taken a ton of coyotes, Javalina’s and even a few feral hog’s. If you reload you can get some amazing performace with the lighter bullets. I’ve crono’d 85 grain HP’s at almost 2000 fps through the 7 1/2 inch barrels.Very flat shooting for a pistol and still carry around 700 ft-lbs at 100 yards. Plus I have to add they’re just a fun rifle to have. Enjoy!
What components do you use (no need to give charge weights)? Do you use published data for your handloads?
The repro Inlands have a poor reputation - right out of the box there were problems with bolt heat treatment (too soft). I’m not impressed with what I read about their customer service either.
Yep. Same-ol’ same-ol’ howbout u?
Get you some 110 grain lead hollow points, it is a vicious and highly effective round for self-defense.
Recommend Desert Publications M1 CARBINE Owners Manual
You can find it online or at gun shows
Disassemble and clean it get about 10 or 12 magazines and a box of milsurplus ammo go shooting this gun is accurate and fun
Plus is really reliable I have run 100’s of rounds through mine at a set and it just keeps humming mine is an early universal with mainly GI parts
Again have fun get the right web gear and you can tote a couple of hundred rounds with out breaking a sweat (I am 5’10” 170lbs and this gun fits me like a glove) And don’t listen to any abuse of this platform My Dad used it in three war zones. It kept him alive.
Enjoy your new ‘war baby’

Remington or American Eagle.
I remember when I got mine ammo was $15 a box, now it’s close to $30.
Very fun shot. Great to learn iron sight on.
Enjoy.
Additional thought, as you go get GI bolt and operating handle also get a GI trigger group if you can find one some what better heat treatment and milled vs cast
Really confused by the gripes on Sellier & Belloit it is expensive but when necessary I use it as diagnostic on recalcitrant weapons for function and accuracy S&B have been making ammo literally since ammo was invented
Really like it other than $$$$
I’ve shot PPU in .223/5.56 and .308. Been happy with it. Never had a problem.
Thanks for your well thought out advice woerm. I’ll definitely look into GI parts for the weapon. I make it a point to put together a maintainence & repair program for all of my firearms, to include manuals, tools and spare parts. I also install spare parts and run the weapon with them, often keeping the original parts in reserve if they test well. Thanks again.
Started with published and experimented from there. Sierra has a 85 grain SP that I’ve been shooting for years with great success. Small rifle primers and Winchester 296 or H110. 17.5 grains of H110 behind the 85 Sierra gives me about 1900 fps from the 7 1/2 inch Ruger and just over 2200 fps from the carbine. My preferred primer is the CCI 450 magnum small rifle primer. Hope that helps.
It should. I’m new to the cartridge and haven’t got any dies for it yet, but your load looks interesting. I’m curious about your Rugers. I remember when Ruger came out with that Blackhawk. I think it was called the SRM in honor of Bill Ruger’s deceased son. I remember reading about a problem with flame cutting on the guns forcing cone. Did you have any problem with that?
