Not "Shepards." That was the first American Mercury astronaut, Alan Shepard, who later hit his 5-iron on the moon.

"Shepherds," short for "sheep-herds." Originally, they herded sheep.

Thank you. I can’t believe how many people (especially owners) get this all wrong.

It’s “sheep-herd”, as in the men also who tend the sheep, like in Bethlehem?
