On the USS California (CGN 36) we had a “urinal” in the middle of a work space in engineering. Not sure if it really was used as purposed, but it did make a great spittoon.

Space is space...Why put in a single function bowl when you can install a dual function bowl in the same space. Duh...

Your first part is right. And when six urinals fit in the same space as three stalls, making this change doesn't make sense.

I posted the lyrics to the old cowboy ditty, “Tie My Pecker To A Tree” and an outraged mod read me the Riot act.
That was a few years ago.

I must have missed the original, so it appears you are overdue for a repeat.

They do indeed make it. Primarily for propulsion. Any excess is for the crew. But I would Not describe it as ‘loads’. Woe be to the sailor found wasting water.

I would imagine a nuke vessel would have much higher capacity to make fresh water than a diesel

Space, as always, is at a premium on a ship or boat. Machinery is sized to fit the space and need, not the other way around. Nuke or diesel, makes no difference.

Had a roomie. For about a year in the 1970s. Tin can sailor and also on a missile cruiser.
When he first moved in he would fill the sink with water to wash and shave. It would drain and there’d be little whiskers all over the sink. ‘Sorry’ he’d say. ‘Was trained not to waste water in the navy’.

Not having that particular training and living in a well watered state I enjoy luxuriating in the shower and keep the water running while I shave. The waste goes into cesspools and filters through a mile of sand to get back into aquifers.

I can understand not wasting water out at sea, though.

What about women who forget to put the seat back up when they’re done?
