From what I've read, the Amazon warehouses work their people like dogs in a high stress environment.
Try working in an automotive body stamping plant......
There's lots of lousy jobs out there, somebody will take it......

There’s talk about Amazon building a distribution facility at the old Ford Visteon site here in Shelby Twp., MI........Great news for the area if it happens.

It's like what I told my son when he applied for a job at the Apple Store down at the mall. This isn't the same Apple of Cupertino. No! The last time I was in an Apple Store, the workers seemed quite content and upbeat.
I've never been in an Amazon Store, so I don't know if their workers are happy. But I do buy plenty of stuff from Amazon.

Worry about building up your assets later in life. That's terrible advice.
When young, live cheap, work hard, and invest for the long term. The time value of money is on your side.
If you're fifty and don't have enough to retire (if forced), that's a big red flag.

Give it a try. If it’s not good you can look for another job.

Over the decades, I never had a job that took me a year to decide if it was right for me. A "year" was an arbitrary amount of time. The more menial the job, the less time it probably takes to decide.
I chose a year for a more substantial position. It might take a year to become familiar with the full range of work, to determine whether or not your responsibilities align with the job for which you interviewed, to understand the organizational hierarchy, to see how your management treats you, how the company treats its people, etc.
My point was that if you're trying to determine whether or not a $14/hour job is right for you--it's probably not a big deal if you decided to leave it quickly and look somewhere else.

I oppose Cabela’s because they fired an employee who handed out political material on his own time, outside of work, because they did not like the material he handed out.
Hint: It was not leftist material.

Sounds like opening a bar next door might be the way to go.Get together with two partners you trust and nail down your real estate and apply for your liquor license right away. It takes time. Start out with sandwiches.

The time value of money is on your side.
That's ancient advice you're giving out there Cynwoody. With banks giving 0.1% interest in a 3% inflationary environment you are losing value every day on every nickel you put in a bank. And if you want to recommend the manipulated and big-money controlled stock market as a good "investment" I point you to the 45% drop in the market back in 2008 and 2009. Just one of those every generation wipes out all of your profits and a lot of your capital. When you take inflation into account the market is just now back to even after 8 years. That is even - no, none, zero profits on your invested capital at all for all the time it has been sitting there at risk in that cesspool called a market.
Trust yourself, not the crooks running the financial system we are forced to live within. Build your skills, look to expand your opportunities by starting a business or finding a consulting niche - and then when you have everything you need to go big (skills, contacts and cash) make your play in the market (if necessary) and then get out quick.

It is in Aurora, IL. I'm aware they're building a distribution center in Crest Hill, IL which is near Joliet and not terribly far from me. Amazon claiming they're going to create 8,000 jobs in Illinois in 2018. What are they building in Aurora?

Work is work. As long as you can do it, it would be better than welfare.

It is unusual for Amazon to hire directly. Unless you are coming in as a supervisor or higher expect very hard physical work. A very ridged work environment and lot’s of stress. I live very close to one of their fulfillment centers that has been in the area for many years. Let’s just say that the neighborhood has a great deal of former Amazon employees.
If you are over 50 years old don’t expect to do it long term.
