Why would phasing out petrol cars be a bad thing?

Are there people who would do anything in their power to hang onto petrol engines?

Because coercing people into half-baked technology is a bad thing. When alternatives to gasoline become technically and economically competitive, the market will gobble them up. It won’t need the government to force it.

Why should government “phase out” any technology at all? It is not their business to force people to buy something they may not want, especially if it’s an Otto-cycle-engine gasoline-burning car they want. Or even an incandescent bulb. Let the market decide. It’s bad enough that the government interferes to the degree that the diesel cars that a sizable number want are forced out of the US market in particular. This “phas(ing) out” by government is all about control and nothing else.
