To be honest I had a buddy of mine at ODU who was a dark skinned fellow and long story short said the same thing fred said somewhat, and gave a brutal truth, most people leave the hood, cut themselves off from the trash, and never look back plus hoping they can fit in elsewhere.
There are exceptions, but they are few. They are also silent with respect to these issues
