Lots of ordinary college kids were there to hear the super bands of the time. Certainly not all “smelly hippies.” The country has scores of huge music festivals every year now, all going back to this grand daddy of them all.
I agree with your assessment. I went a festival 3 weeks after woodstock that was not as large but had most of the same bands and vibe. Lots of high school and college kids as well as hippies.
Thanks for saying that. I would have gone for the music, but probably would have turned around on the road and gone home because of traffic and overwhelming crowd.
I am surprised the number was only 400K. That seems so small considering how huge the story has become. I would have thought multi-millions.
My oldest brother was there. A sexaholic 17 year old at the time, but a Conservative now. Go figure.
Monterey Pop is cited as being the grand daddy of these festivals although there was one in SF the week before Monterey Pop and there were the Newport jazz and folk fests before that.
There were a lot of these fests in 1969 before and after Woodstock, with a number of the same acts.
