I was only 12 at the time so I definitely didn’t go and am glad I didn’t. I did however attend the punk/new wave woodstock in 1980 called Heatwave outside Toronto and it was a blast. B52s Talking Heads Pretenders Elvis Costello and others.

I wanted to go to Heatwave, but spent all my cash to go see The Who for the very first time at Toronto's CNE Stadium the month before. And talk about heatwave.

I traveled from Syracuse to Toronto with some friends in the back of a panel van with no seats, no back windows, and of course no air conditioning. There was an old style round cooler filled with water, and I would lean my face over the open top just to get some relief from the heat.

I didn't experience any issues at the show itself, unlike lots of other fans. It helped to be up in the stands and not on the field. We missed openers J. Geils Band and Jean-Luc Ponty, but got there in time for Heart. My friends were going elsewhere in Canada after the show, so I spent the night sleeping on a park bench near the bus station, and took the first bus back to Syracuse once it opened in the morning. Ah, to be young again!
