“Not seeing Jimmy Dean. Roger Miller?”
Oops! It was early... Roger Miller!
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Roger Miller on tour with his guitar player at the time, Danny Gatton. I went to see Danny Gatton but I was very pleased with the whole concert, those two worked real well together.
Jimmy Dean had a few good ones too!
When I was in high school I had a part-time job at a industrial kitchen up the street in Northern Virginia and our supervisor was a lady named Ann. She had been a bartender down in Southeast DC back when it was a dynamic Country and Western music scene, with a flourishing tavern hang out kind of a place. Ann had a scrapbook with Roy Clark Jimmy Dean riding Harleys, Patsy, at el... and all these C&W stars in it. An amazing scrapbook. Ann was one of a kind.
That whole DC scene was totally different in the early sixties and that’s where Roger Miller and Danny Gatton probably first met, so they weren’t unfamiliar with each other, I can only imagine that they had a history going back to that Southeast DC C&W period.
I worked in Southeast DC in 1979. By that time, the country-western scene was long gone, and the culture was dominated by staffers and bureaucrats, with “yuppie” tastes, from nearby Capitol Hill. A favorite place to eat was the Hawk ‘n’ Dove, an upscale burger joint popular with hawks as well as doves from the Hill. I think it’s still there.
