Adam West an actor defined and also constrained by his role in the 1960s series Batman died Friday night in Los Angeles. He was 88. A rep said that he died after a short battle with leukemia.
Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans lives. He was and always will be our hero, his family said in a statement.
With its Wham! Pow! onscreen exclamations, flamboyant villains and cheeky tone, Batman became a surprise hit with its premiere on ABC in 1966, a virtual symbol of 60s kitsch. Yet Wests portrayal of the superhero and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, ultimately made it hard for him to get other roles, and while he continued to work throughout his career, options remained limited because of his association with the character.

I had a Batman puzzle game.
One of my childhood favorites as well. I pretended I was Robin.
Best “Batman” ever! We used to watch his show every afternoon when we came home from school.
My daughter just met him and Burt Ward at a Comic-Con in Dallas in April. She said he and Ward did a Q&A also, and both were very funny and nice.
He didn’t make any mention of being ill.
I collected all 36 of them! The one that took a bunch of nickles to find was the Riddler! Ah, 1966...
You had to be there in the 1960s to get it.

Rest in peace.
Good night old chum.

One of the neighbor little kids would go CRAZY when he heard the opening tune.
Myself, I remember whenever the ending theme song to Gunsmoke was playing, I would run and put on my leather vest and stand at attention in front of the TV. My parents/siblings thought I was strange.
Batman Trivia - any time the “bad guys” are shown in their lair, the camera angle is not straight. It’s crooked. Because, of course - they are crooks!
“Never liked any of the Batman movies. Too dark and missed Adam in the role”
The original Batman comics WERE dark.
He was The Dark Knight.
They had to lighten it up for tv or it would have never been shown.
Too bad Adam West was typecast by the character. I always thought he was a pretty good actor.

I had that toy.
When I visited Sun Valley, Idaho, they told me to look up Adam West in the Sun Valley phonebook. And I can verify that this is how it really was.

When I was pledging my fraternity one of the more popular pledge line questions was:
“Who were the baddest and the bat-est Betas?”
The answer was George Peppard and Adam West.
Rest in peace, brother.
Forever in -kai-
when Adam West entered a room Chuck Norris would tremble
I still remember this exchange between Batman and the Penguin (or maybe the Riddler) on the old series:
Penguin: Your mother wears army boots!
Batman: Yes, she did. And she found them quite comfortable!
Nobody messes with Adam We. :)
He was the best Batman ever. That show kept true to the campy nature of the original comics. The new stuff has turned to the dark side.
Imagine assembling a cast of typecast actors such as Batman, Jethro, Gilligan, etc.
Picked up an earlier thread.
Recall his great line to Audra on Big Valley: “I thought you were pure.”
