my uncle landed at Normandy D-Day +1 (June 7) and was killed somewhere outside St. Lo on July 28, 1944. Will never forget. And I honor my brave father who passed less than a month ago at age 90. He wanted to go fight after his older brother was killed, but was colorblind. He failed the eye test in every major branch of the military. He finally found and memorized the eye test, making it into the Merchant Marines. He was a radio operator on the SS Laurel Hill in the Pacific Arena. He was always ashamed of his service because he wasn't a soldier. When I learned of what he did, he became a hero to me. <3

merchantman in the Pacific with Nip Subs looking for them.
