Find me guys who say they golf instead of play golf. I’d love to play them for money. If you don’t play golf, you won’t understand the difference. Now “golf” is used sometimes among real players in comments on how a partner is playing at the moment. “You are really golfing your ball” means “You are playing well.” Basically, “I golf” is really faggy.
