I know what happened. If he couldn't carry the load on the Rich assassination, he should have shut his mouth to begin with. His mouth wrote a check his ass couldn't cash. Be inspector Clouseau somewhere else.
That was the problem right there. He should never had put the attention on the assassination. That gave the libs the talking point of "being cruel" to the family. Instead, he should have just concentrated on Rich being the leaker ( by, for example, trying to find out who the intermediary who passed the info in the park was). Once that is proven, the rest falls in place.
