It was definitely sophomoric schtick. It wasn't great filmography. It wasn't meant to be.
It was designed to be a low thought provoking, simply entertaining movie. And it succeeded. And Hanks was a major part of its success.
Then you go from that, to what he did in Saving Private Ryan or Gump.
That versatility, that success, that is acting greatness.
