Paul Muni I had never heard of until today. A six time Academy Award Nominee. Most active during the 30’s and 40’s. Died almost 50 years ago.

You’ll enjoy discovering his films, some of which are shown on TCM from time to time — Scarface, I’m a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (based on a true story), The Good Earth. Like Lon Chaney and from his days in Yiddish theater, he was a master of makeup & disguise. He could play just about any ethnicity or accent. He was so good at it, that many did not recognize his normal appearance.

Addendum: “I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang” was made while the real life subject, Robert Burns, was still at large. Burns actually traveled to Hollywood to serve as an advisor on the film. The movie doesn’t reveal Burns’ ultimate fate, as it wasn’t known at the time. However, recommend you see the film, and then look up Burns’ bio.

My favorite Paul Muni movie is “The Commandos Strike At Dawn”.

Sometimes TCM runs a short bio on him.
