“Anyone who forgets that they have something akin to a wolf in their living room is a fool, no matter the size or breed of said semi-wolf.”
I would love to know the % of people who bother to train their dog, even the barest minimum no/stay/sit/heel/come or whatever. It might be single digits. It makes for miserable dogs and miserable people.
Freegards
I don’t know the actual stats, but I do know that some people with small dogs and so-called “harmless breeds” generally turn them into spoiled brats.
I see YouTubes videos of people *laughing* when their little dog is totally red-zoning and trying to bite, sometimes, successfully.
Imagine letting a 200 pound Kangal pull that crap.
All of my dogs start their training the second they come home.
Of course, I don’t expect as much from an 8 week old pup as an older dog, but I get them to learn as much as they can handle.
Odin and Seven, as 12 week old pups, both learned to sit, down and give paw in less than 20 minutes.
They also know that anything they have is actually “mine” [food, toys, whatever] and they must relinquish it, immediately, no matter what, when I hold out my hand.
I also use hand singles with the voice commands, in case they ever go deaf, in their old age.
*I* am solely responsible for *anything* my dogs do and I take that very seriously.
What a world it would be if everyone felt the same way.
