Forensic science makes it possible for pathologists to differentiate between the impact of an object against the skull one one hand and the impact of the skull against an object on the other.
I realize that that might be counter-intuitive for some.

I fell off a horse and got clobbered in the head by the horse galloping behind me. After I woke up and rested for a spell I was okay (and rode back down the mountain). Although it might be why certain things just aren’t in my memory bank anymore.
If the horse had killed me, I don’t think my brother would have killed his horse and buried the head with me. But I bet a Mongolian from 1,100 years ago just might! (I’m guessing they put it in the grave, and the saddle, so she would have something to ride in the afterlife.)
