They would help a golfer drive the ball further.

Unless you can hit the ball straight on every drive, further distance will ultimately kill your game.

Tournament courses today are designed for accuracy, not distance since a 3 wood and five iron will likely get them in wedge distance to the green on most par fives. Most of the par fives will have bunkers or other obstacles such as trees and dog legs that would severely encumber a long driver if his drive wasn't spot on...........And that's why they're there, to challenge the over confident long distance hitter.......

There are courses the long bombers stay away from, but many of the majors favor the longer hitters. I remember an interview when Tiger said there were only about 10 players that had a chance at winning that major. Tiger did a majority of his scoring on the par 5's. He was hitting mid irons into a lot of par 5s if he drove into the fairway. Even if he got into the thick ruff, he was able to hack it out and get somewhere near the green for an eagle chip. It was a strategy that won him many tournaments, but likely shortened his career.
