I can’t speak for Brother refills. I’ve had the same HP laser for 8 years and the time I bought a generic brand the moderate savings did not make up for the shorter life of the cartridge.
One thing with laser printers. ALWAYS see what brand name refills cost for the printer BEFORE you buy it. It may well be cheaper to pay more for the printer and get it back with lower cost refills down the road.
I've never had a problem nor noticed any difference in print quality over using a true brother cart.
Could you possibly need a replacement drum?
My Brother HL-5140 gets a bit sparse at the default print quality of 300x300 dpi. Blackens right up at 600x600 dpi, for printing grey scale photos and what not.
Have you tried changing your print quality?
We have been ordering a generic toner cartridge from Ink Technologies for our Samsung ML-3170 printer without any problems, saving over $100 per cart.
I have been buying toner cartridges for my Brother multi-function laser from Toner Kingdom. They have been just as good as OEM at a fraction of the cost. Check them out on Ebay.
Don’t know much about anyhthing regarding electronics. But I use the HP INSTANT INK program. $2.99 a month for fifty copies.
Have had very good luck with the Linkyo cartridges. have used them for about 4 years now in my HP printer
From a guy whose former career makes me an expert on the topic, your first mistake was buying a Brother.
Free advice to all: The easiest thing to do is find a LOCAL shop that provides BOTH remanufactured cartridges and printers and ask their advice. We did NOT carry brands/models which we could not supply reliable reman ctgs. Brother was never sold.

I have 2 Brother printers for our office, and they take the TN660 cartridges (2600 monochrome prints). I’ve been able to find actual Brother replacements on sale for around $45-46.
I’m currently trying out an “equivalent” cartridge from Rosewill (purchased at newegg.com on a 2-for-$20 special). So far so good, and the only complaint is that the printers don’t recognize that it’s a new cartridge and keep trying to tell me I’m low on toner.
My (limited) experience. If I was printing a lot (so replacing toner every few months, at least), then I had good luck with refills. When I started printing much less, then my printers started clogging. So, if you only need one cartridge a year, probably just buy OEM, but if you print a lot, you can save a lot by refilling.
I had good luck with these guys:
Why not just make your own?
75% saltpeter (potassium nitrate), 15% charcoal, 10% sulfur.
Wait a second. That won’t work.
That’s gun powder. Never mind.
Just print stuff at work like I do.
When you choose the print option when you go to print , are you checking the print properties first ? Make sure it is set on black and white and fine quality ( not express or economical printing. )
I noticed Costco has recently begun offering a local refill service for laserjet cartridges at about 1/2 the cost of a new toner cartridge.
I don’t know if it was a local offer or more nationally linked. SoCA

Sounds like a setting issue.
A few months back I bought 2 TN750 TN-750 HY BLACK Print Toner Cartridge for Brother DCP-8110DN DCP-8150DN for 21.00 (now around 25.00): http://www.ebay.com/itm/361572031317, and it has been printing fine.
You can get two for yours for 15.00: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pk-TN450-Compatible-Toner-Cartridge-For-Brother-Hl-2220-2240-2270dw-Mfc-7360n-/112003397747?hash=item1a13ec3873:g:BYEAAOSw9etXP3yP
