It’s only a 4 hour drive from Chicago to Louisville. I’ve driven it before.

Why didn’t the four employees just drive down to Louisville? As it is the flight itself is over an hour long.

Now instead, United has millions of dollars of bad publicity for being too cheap to rent a car.

I agree. I had to drive a few times when I couldn't get a standby seat (non rev though.) But alas, when Continental Airlines merged with United, customer service went to hell. I was Continental and at the time I was there it had a good rep.

I left before the merger. Everyone at coair KNEW KNEW that merging with United was a huge mistake. But no, Smisek just had to have his "big deal." I hated working for that prick when he was briefly in charge of IT. He is one of the reasons I left. Seems like I made the right choice.

Drive or just a charter a small plane for the four employees. Less expensive than what they did by a long shot. They are at an airport and there’s plenty of FBOs with full service operations.

I double checked and found 4 hours 48 minutes from Chicago O’Hare to Louisville, confirming your comment. So the drive is 2 cups of coffee with one bathroom break. Very doable.
