WEST TOWN During a swimming lesson at a canine aquatic center in West Town, a dog drowned and his owner alleges her family's pet was not aided with CPR that could have saved the dog's life.
"What started as an exciting swimming lesson, ended in a tragedy and a traumatic experience that my family and I will never forget," said Paula Cano, a Maywood resident whose 3-year-old Doberman, Diego, died around 9:15 p.m. on March 31 at Doggy Paddle, 1330 W. Willow St.
Cano said Diego who had never been in a swimming pool but enjoyed wading in the water at Montrose Beach initially resisted, and that was her "first red flag" at the start of the lesson in a pool with Diego's "cousin" Piper, a boxer mix, who was with another instructor in the same pool.

Was that link about a cat- I only saw a beautiful young woman :)
My comment is colored by my three decades of living in NYC where liberal/progressive/collegiate revolutionaries named their pets after their Communist heros. Trotsky, Vlad (after Lenin), Koba (sly reference to Stalin), and Che were pet names encountered in that time. And cats named Mao. Diego Rivera and Frida Khalo were Mexican Communists despite efforts in the last two decades to whitewash their political bent. Riveras commissioned mural at Rockefeller Center featured Lenin as a central figure. Caused a ruckus then and the mural was repainted. So yeah, those “creative” dog names raise a red flag in the same manner as a clueless a$$ wearing a Che tee shirt. As far as the childless part, those of that political bent made it a choice.
“Tragic” is when a child dies. Unfortunate or regrettable is a more appropriate word choice for the death of an animal.
Sounds like he lucked out.
Dogs also have no business being in swimming pools. Their hair will end up clogging the filters and the chlorine probably isn't the best thing for them.
Thanks for that info..I thought all dogs could swim.
We’ve always had Weims and they’re natural swimmers. One of our rescue Weims was afraid of the pool. He had to be coaxed into the water. He was afraid at first, but once in the water, he didn’t need any “instruction” how to swim (but Weims have webbed feet.) We have one dog that’s allergic to grass, and swimming in the pool has been a great form of exercise, without the rashes and breakouts that he gets while taking a walk through the grass.
Our parks department would open the local pool for dogs the day after the pool closed for the season, but before they were drained for the winter. Our lab mix loved the experience and could instinctively swim. However some breeds, particularly English bulldogs, are definitely not swimmers.
Say what?!? A doggy pool? Some people have way too much money and too little common sense.
First, you don’t need a doggy pool. Second, you don’t force a dog into the water. Third, that vest isn’t going to help with anything. Fourth, it’s your dog so it’s your responsibility to make sure he’s safe.
Poor dog didn’t stand a chance with an idiot owner and a cruel incompetent teacher.
Not a thing...unless there’s 4 or 5 of them in one place.
Gets crazy and confusing.
:D
I have a friend who has rescued a lot of Pugs.
Due to their skin folds, they need a lot of maintenance to keep skin yeast infections at bay, which means baths.
She has to be very careful that they don’t flop forward and drown in the bathtub.
o.O
When we built the new dock, we hired the guy who could build a decent dog ramp. Our dogs love the water and never had a lesson in their lives. The cats, not so much. They’re embarrassed and ticked off when they fall in.
Like I said some people should not have kids or pets.
Maybe they should have Googled “Dobermann and water”, first.

That was literally the first result of the search.
Great swimmers, they ain’t.
If my pooch was not a “Water Breed” I don’t think I would be so stupid as to force it near or into water.
This people are total idiots and someone needs to call them out on this stupidity publicly.
I am not big on ratting out folk but the ASPCA may like a call on this one.
How about the loons at PETA
But I said they were the bosses.
Then again, I probably should have admitted that we are their slaves!
Yeah, that’s why he can’t ‘get over it’.
Happy dog! I love it. Our greyhound walked to the end of a dock once and dropped like a stone into about 14 feet of water. My husband walked in right after her and pulled her up from the bottom to safety. It was frightening, but we often laughed about it for years, because it turned out all right. She was so goofy.
They named them after famously communist artists.
May as well have named them Fidel and Raul or Lenin and Stalin.
