You got that right!
Dave Brubeck was a giant in instrumental jazz, along with saxophonist Paul Desmond (who actually wrote Take Five). One can only name a handful of jazz artists that were bigger. The Dave Brubeck Quartet certainly couldn't be classified as a "one hit wonder" in any way, shape, or form.
Blue Rondo a la Turk was another DBQ hit, not to mention The Duke, and several others.
Let's not forget we're talking about jazz here. I'd have to say that, for his era, there weren't many jazz artists who were more popular than Dave Brubeck. He's one of my absolute favorites, with his ethereal piano solos.
I mean, Take Five—in 5/4, no less—is one of the most iconic jazz hits of all time, and Blue Rondo a la Turk—in 9/8—isn't far behind...
Man, I forgot how much I loved that tune. It’s just genius. After your comments, I kept playing it over and over again - manually. Finally Googled how to repeat YouTube selections automatically ( youtuberepeat.com/watch/?v=vmDDOFXSgAs ) and it’s been on in the background ever since. I’m actually afraid now I’m going to get sick of it, and I don’t want that to happen! Maybe I’ll start working in Blue Rondo, Duke and some of their others.
