[Continued from April 28 (reply #99). ]

April 30. Tonight is the first Thursday night that Mrs. Strong is “at home,” with what results of comfort or of boredom time will tell. . . .

Half-past one next morning. The “reception” went off pleasantly; thirty or forty people – Judge Daly and wife, Albert Gallatin and wife, George Bancroft (who talked Trinitarianism to me with great pertinacity and expatiated on the significance and logical force of the Athanasian Creed), Miss Mary Ulshoeffer in full-blown splendor, the Anthons, Miss Jane Emmet, John Coster, Newbold Edgar, .

It’s nice that Mrs. Strong’s reception was a success. Nothing worse than having a social event where nobody shows up but a couple of teenagers hoping for a free meal!

Miss Mary Ulshoeffer in full-blown splendor

Sure he was married, but, hey, a guy can still look. :-))

Especially at half-past one in the morning...

The young lady whose portrait is at this link seems to be the daughter of Mr. Strong's Miss Mary, who married a Mr. Hoffman, an older widower.

The Ulshoeffer family originated with a Hessian mercenary who settled in New York after the Revolutionary War.

Oh, so true.

“Why are all these dishes in the sink, and who are these young men sleeping on the sofas?”

My daughter the guitarist (not to be confused with my daughter the gunner or my daughter the artist or my daughter the 5-year-old hellion) loves the guitar on this.

My daughter the serial killer loves... wait a minute, did I just day that?

It’s Sunday and am totally in a joking mood.

I have no evidence that any of the Offspring is a serial killer, yet. If anyone’s going to be ...

Let me think about it.

And as we bid a fond farewell to April 1857 . . . things are getting a little strange.

Who doesn’t speculate on the possibility of one of their children’s turning out to be a serial killer? I’ll bet Alexander Hamilton did!

Chock it up to giddiness on my part. Nothing more.

Bye, bye April, hello May and summer... :-)

Judging from the portrait, I’d say her mom was a looker. :-))

You might enjoy the lead article on this thread. It is by a gentleman touring the Holy Land in 1857, during Ottoman rule.
