FULL TITLE: Children have a stable home environment and perform better at school if their biological father lives with them (but the same benefits do not apply when a stepfather moves in)

Children are healthier and more likely to grow up with a good education and get a good job if their biological father lives with them, research reveals.

But when a stepfather moves into a family home there are no benefits for the children, the pioneering study of British families found.

The warning over the failure of stepfathers to help the families they bring up was drawn from records of the lives of more than 1,000 children born to single mothers at the turn of the Millennium.

The study, carried out by three researchers from the London School of Economics, checked on reports of the health, intelligence and social skills of the children up to the age of seven.

Why is this news? This has been established fact for many years.

I have an IQ in the 160+ range.

Then you should know that the value of a generalization is whether it is GENERALLY true. The existence of exceptions such as yours does nothing to invalidate this study.

>And this screwy “study” completely fails to address all the wonderful step-parents who have actually made a positive difference in their step-children’s lives.

That’s because good step parents are rare. For every success story there’s many more stories of failure.

“Actually in the modern dating market most of the women are chasing hot sex while a minority of men are getting most of it on a rotating basis. The vast majority of men would like nothing better than to get married and have a family but women are too busy screwing around and working making it largely impossible.”

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I’ve heard that some women would like to get married but it’s next to impossible because of all the free sex given out by other women. I’ve heard that some men are afraid to get married because divorce (thanks again Women’s lib) would ruin them.

I discuss the psychological effects of OOW (Out of Wedlock) births in “Chaos and Mayhem”

But it is better than abortion, I guess.

Their problem though is that the London School of Economics is Left wing. How the results of this study ever saw the light of day is a mystery to me.

There is truth in what you say. When women give away their bodies, they give away their power. I suppose it takes a divorce lawyer to get that power back.

I handled hundreds of cases, maybe 700 or so, in juvenile court not counting adoptions. These would have been “kids in trouble” kinds of cases. In all but a couple the kids did not have both legal parents living at home.

My son has a father and a step-father. He loves them both. I get along with his Dad so that helps. Things did not work out for us but, he has always known his father loved him, as does his step-dad. We may be an exception. I am grateful that he has them both.

FBI statistics verify the accuracy of this study. Those incarcerated for violent crimes including sexual crimes overwhelmingly OOW.

Your case is not OOW and other studies indicate that having a deceased parent who was married to the mother does not have the same effect on children.

Your mother sounds remarkable and far from the norm. Lord knows it is hard enough for two parents to raise a child properly much less having only one. Adding to the problem is the mothers are generally not bright or educated or working.

Because we live in the Age of Feminist Ignorance it is good to have this study.

Some times I wonder. Giving birth to vicious bastards has negative effects all through society and that is what the state subsidizes now.

Yes, there are exceptions; sometimes kids love a good stepfather same as their real dad (or better in a few cases) and the stepfather is devoted to the kids, also may help if they are married. One of the worst things a single mom can do is move a boyfriend in, the more in the series, the worse for the kids.

But even with a boyfriend not the kids' bio dad can be an exception although I can't think of any offhand.

Another observation I've made concerning fathers is that the father has to be really terrible to damage the children. If he drinks a little too much or has moderate bad habits like smoking, occasional pot, some bickering with spouse but not chronic, the kids still seem to feel more safe and secure and thus do better in school. Being financially better off makes a difference, too.

I think there is still social stigma for kids with single moms, divorced/never married but doesn't seem any stigma with widows. It also has to do with a child's self esteem and how they relate to their peers.

Just my opinion.

This isn’t the first study showing this. But of course the left will attack it for being unfair to single mothers. There are also studies showing that having a non-biological male in the home (I.e. Boyfriend) increases the risk of death to the children.

Now if we were a sane soceity we would teach these facts to kids in school, but that would hurt to many peoples feelings.

I've heard that children of deceased parents are not burdened with the sense of abandonment that OOW children are.

Exceptions don’t make the rule. What these studies show is that a larger percentage of children raised in single parent homes have bad grades, get in trouble in school, etc. It is not saying all children from two parent homes avoid these problems but that a smaller percentage have them.

I could have been a poster child for this. My parents were divorced when I was young. My mom was disabled with mental health issues and my dad was abusive. Luckily, I joined the military and got straightened out and have provided my children with the two parent home I always wanted. Actually, I give most of the credit to my wonderful wife.

Also I think IQ has something to do with it too. Im not nearly as high as you, 124, but I suspect that a large majority of kids that prosper in a single parent situation probably have a higher than average IQ and don’t destroy it
with drugs or alcohol.
