Minneapolis participated in the founding of the league and the first player draft but never fielded a team.

The NFL created the Cowboys and the Vikings to try to kill the AFL aborning. After all, it had worked for Major League Baseball and the Continental League.

“The NFL created the Cowboys and the Vikings to try to kill the AFL aborning. After all, it had worked for Major League Baseball and the Continental League.”

Didn’t quite work out, did it.
Though they did force the Texans out of Dallas in 1963.
They moved to KC and became the Chiefs.
Also in 63 the New York Titans were sold and became the Jets.
That same year former Citadel assistant coach Al Davis became head coach and managing general partner of da Raydahz.

Regarding “Broadway” Joe Namath: because he was the most exciting player in the draft the owners and league officials met in the proverbial smokey back room and decided that Joe would be drafted by the Jets because NY was the center of all things media and the league wanted him where the big time media would write about his every movement.
A pure PR move, and Joe gladly gave the media plenty to write about.
