Yorktown was before the French Revolution.
It killed off their best.
French Foreign Legion has been comprised of non French for years.

I concur with your comments re the French military, especially La Legion Etrangere. I spent some time in Africa back in the day. In Djibouti and N’Djamena I passed a few evenings in hotel bars swilling beer and trying to converse with them in my pidgin French (two years of college French). I was most impressed with their soldiering.

Yup. The French's best military outfit is composed primarily of non-French.
