I had mumps when I was a kid many, many years ago.
Back in the day when mumps, measles, etc was all considered normal childhood diseases.
Mumps are very painful

Mumps were just a typical childhood disease right up to the 70’s in the US. Mumps were regarded as not good but also not that big of a deal, other than being housebound and sick for a week or so for the vast majority of people, with the exception of males past puberty in which case it could cause very painful testicular swelling and sterility. I recall an instance of mumps that a neighborhood boy had, he was 16 and was hospitalized. I recall that it also caused some heart problems. I also recall that it was unusual for a male past puberty to get mumps, since it was assumed that most would have had it in childhood.
