Cafe X opens in San Francisco, bringing robots to the coffee shop
Posted Jan 30, 2017 by John Mannes (@JohnMannes)
The worlds first coffee shop opened in Constantinople in 1555. Four hundred and some years later, Cafe X is putting a twist on that old barista model. Opening in San Francisco today, the startup is opting instead to have a large robotic arm craft your caffeinated potions.
Founder Henry Hu noticed that baristas spent a majority of their time moving cups around while making espresso drinks. So, much like anyones natural reaction to that epiphany, Hu decided to build a fully mechanized coffee shop. At scale, Cafe X should be able to increase margins within the industry while reducing wait times for hurried patrons.
Third-wave coffee affectionados dealing in drips and expensive siphons might find fault in Hus thesis, though a Mitsubishi 6-axis industrial robot is arguably the most elite tool imaginable for making coffee.

Quick, California! Start taxing robots!
Kryten would pay it out of guilt, Marvin would loathe and accept it.
SF needs an ordinance declaring the robots as oppressed, underpaid, overworked equivalent of illegal aliens
Thus, the robots should be declared “humans” with “rights” to ID as such, and thus be entitled to $15 minimum wage, plus benefits
And welcomed in the gay bars Gee, just think of the endurance, the staying power.
What say you Board of Supervisors?
Are they homosexual robots, considering it’s San Francisco???
“Coffee”, made by a human or a robot in those places is highly over rated and not worth buying.
Is the robot in the union?
what next? A robotic hooters restaurant?
The MOST important question is: which bathroom will they use???
It’s all cute and novel until they demand 15 quarts of oil an hour...
Interesting. What benefits do robots get?
This is what happens when you demand $15 an hour plus benefits.
Is the robot over educated and under employed like the humans?
Sick leave, Obamacare High-Deductible Insurance, long term disability, 401(k), reimbursed lube jobs, free subscription to PlayBot magazine
When it comes to robotic coffee shops, Hu is first.
California, you need to tell the robot owners that they need $15/hour, family leave, health care (or is it electronics care?) and 2 weeks vacation (they need to recharge their batteries!).
This will create jobs instead of destroying them, when you consider all the tattoos the robots will need.
